Flag Raising Ceremonies
The Trinidad and Tobago Independence Act of 1962 was an Act of the Parliament of the United Kingdom that granted independence to Trinidad and Tobago with effect from 31 August 1962. As a result of the Act, Trinidad & Tobago became an independent country in the West Indies achieving independence from the United Kingdom.
Dr. Eric Williams delivered the following speech to the nation over the radio:
“Fellow Citizens, it is a great honour to me to address this morning the citizens of the Independent Nation of Trinidad and Tobago as their first Prime Minister. Your National Flag has been hoisted to the strains of your National Anthem, against the background of your National Coat of Arms, and amidst the beauty of your National Flower.”
To commemorate this auspicious occasion, the board and members of the Trinidad and Tobago Association of Ontario raise the nation’s flag in both Mississauga and Brampton. We encourage all people of Trinidad and Tobago heritage and lovers of the twin island nation to join us in these celebrations.
We celebrate the flag raising in Mississauga at the City Hall, 300 City Centre Dr, Mississauga, ON L5B 3C1 on August 30th. In Brampton, the celebration is on August 31st at City Hall, 2 Wellington St W, Brampton, ON L6Y 4R2
